I chased rainbows all day yesterday. The first one was in the morning when I left the studio after teaching a Saturday morning class. In the afternoon there was one on our way to a holiday bazaar featuring local artists.
My husband and I like taking an old road instead of freeways or highways. We don’t want to be in a hurry or hassled by other drivers who are in a hurry. The less stressful the more enjoyable the trip becomes for us. The path we take to the destination is as important as the destination itself.
That day, we saw deer and dozens of wild turkeys along the way. I have never seen them in such a number before!
As we were driving a local road running parallel to a highway, still chasing a rainbow as the sun was behind us as we headed northeast, I noticed something.
Those cars hurrying on the highway were going through the rainbow arch.
That was a very metaphoric moment for me.

The rainbow pictured in our head is constantly changing as we progress and grow through life.
Just last month, I heard Rachel Cargle of Elizabeth’s Bookshop say something that really resonated with me.
In a conversation during a book launch Zoom event with Nicole Walters of her first book Nothing is Missing, Rachel, as a fellow author, said something like “We are not the author of the book”.
From listening to their conversation, I understood what she meant by saying that is that, by the time a book is published and they are promoting it, they have grown and changed so much from the experience of writing and publishing that they are in a completely different place in their life and has even become a different person.
We are changing constantly
We can never be the same person as we were yesterday because we have experienced something different, received new information, had done a routine one more time than yesterday. We can’t stay the same. It’s just not possible.
Think about that for a second. Who were you a year ago? And who are you today? Did any ideas change? Did your preference change? Did what you want in life change? Did what you prioritize change?
The rainbow we picture in our heads is going to change along with us while we progress and grow through life.
We might be thinking that we are still chasing the same rainbow. It’s quite possible that you might just have not realized that you have gone through many rainbows before finding the current rainbow you are chasing.
What does your rainbow look like today?
No matter how many rainbows we chase, you will never see yourself go through it with your own eyes.
However, others watching us chasing rainbows might witness us reach and pass through a rainbow arch one at a time – just like the car I saw passing under the colorful arch. I have no doubt that the car’s driver nor the passengers saw the same thing – their rainbow was ahead of them. They had not yet gone through it, even though I saw them go through it.
It might seem like chasing rainbows is a lifelong pursuit. But remember, it’s like those good-ol’ road trips, the road you take is as important as the shiny destination.
As you chase your rainbows, you are changing and improving for the better.
You are not the same person who saw your rainbow the first time.
What does your rainbow look like today?
